Fixing common problems
What a message means, and what to do about it.
Windows says the publisher is unknown
This is Windows speaking, not Metis. The installer is not signed yet, so Windows cannot name who made it. Run it only if you downloaded it from the download page.
“No model is set up yet.”
Home says this when Metis has no model to talk to. Press “Finish setup” and choose a model. Setting up goes through the steps.
Chats says “No model is set up yet.” beside the same link, and Research says “No model is set up yet, so research has no model to ask.” Both are fixed the same way.
“Couldn’t look up the models. What happened is under Details.”
This is the Model step. Metis asks the model hub which models it can offer, so it needs the internet. Open Details to read what happened, then press “Find models again”. “Looks online for the models that fit this computer again.”
“Setting up the model didn’t finish. What happened is under Details.”
A download or an install stopped before it was done. You can try again from the step: a download resumes from what it kept, and if it is refused again, Details says why. Press the button the step offers.
“No model server is running on this computer.”
This is the Server step. A model server is the program that runs a model, and Metis found none already running. This is fine: press “Install Metis’s model server”, and Metis downloads a model and runs a model server of its own.
“Metis found no graphics card.”
This is the Computer step. Metis counts a card only when it can tell the card runs models. Without one, models run on the processor and in the computer’s memory, which is slower. Which model fits which computer says how Metis chooses.
“None of the models Metis knows fits this computer, so there is nothing to download.”
Nothing Metis offers in Setup fits this computer’s memory. You can still connect a hosted service, from Models under “Connect a hosted service”. “Chats sent there leave this computer.”
Download anyway
Before it downloads, Setup measures the drive the model goes on. It asks first when the download would leave under a tenth of the drive free, with “A drive this full can write slowly.” Or when the drive is too small, with “so it would not fit.” Free some space and press Install again, or press “Download anyway” if you want it as it is.
“Won’t fit”
In Models, “Won’t fit” on a model means its files are larger than the memory this computer has for them. Which model fits which computer says how Metis works it out. Pick a model with the badge Fits, or one marked Tight if you can accept it being slower.
“Not paired”
The phone says why, when the pairing code was refused. The code was wrong (“Wrong code.” and how many tries are left: check it and try again), it ended after too many wrong tries (“someone may be guessing it”), or none was live (it was used, cancelled or timed out). For the last two, on the computer press “Pair a phone” and use the new code. Pairing a phone has the steps.
“A code is live, but the network is closed.”
A pairing code is showing, but this computer’s way in over the Wi-Fi is not open, so a phone cannot reach it. Press Cancel. Further down the same page, On this Wi-Fi says whether the way in is open (“No phone can reach this Metis over the network now.” when it is shut) and shows a fault if it has met one.
“Using Metis away from home needs two-step sign-in first.”
Reaching Metis from anywhere is off until two-step sign-in is on. Set it up on Devices. Pairing a phone has the steps.
“No relay answered”
Devices says this beside the address when Metis cannot reach the relay. It also says “Metis keeps trying.” Press “Try now” to ask once more; Metis then says whether the relay reached, refused or timed out. Press “Turn off” to stop using the relay. After “Turn off”, Devices says “Turned off. Phones reach this Metis on this Wi-Fi only.”
“can't be reached.”
A phone sees this page when it opens your Metis address and the computer cannot be reached. The page names your computer and says “It may be off, asleep or offline. Turn it on and this page reconnects by itself.” Wake the computer and check it is online; the phone tries again by itself, or press Try again.
“Not sent”
When you send a report and it cannot be delivered, Metis says “Not sent”, then why, and saves the report as a file, saying where. The last words are “Send this file.” Send that file to the author yourself. A report goes only when you press its button.
“The approvals could not be read, so none is shown; nothing was decided.”
Metis could not read the list of approvals waiting for you, so it shows none. Nothing was approved or declined by this. Open the page again, and if it says this again, send a report.
“No search provider is set up: name your provider’s search address in Settings, under Search.”
Research needs a web search to read the web with. Open Settings, find Search, and name the address of your search provider there.
