Questions
Short answers to what people ask first.
Does Metis send my chats anywhere?
Not with a model that runs on this computer. Metis works on your computer, with your files and your model, and it sends nothing to the author unless you say Yes to a question that asks.
A hosted model service is different. A chat with a model from one leaves this computer, and Metis says so when you connect one: “Chats sent there leave this computer.”
What does Metis send the author?
Nothing, unless you press a button or say Yes.
- “Send a report” sends a bug report only when you press its button. You can attach one file, and your conversation goes only if you tick it.
- Only the beta builds ask two questions, once each: whether to send a daily count of numbers (not what you wrote), and after that whether to send records of what Metis did. A build without them sends nothing. Not answering is the same as No. You can turn either off on Updates, in the card “The daily count”.
The privacy policy has the whole list.
Do I need an account?
No. Metis has no accounts. Your chats, your files, your keys and your answers to the set-up questions stay on this computer.
Does it need the internet?
Metis needs it to install, to download a model, to check for a newer version, and for Research and web search. Away from home, your phone reaches Metis through a relay. Pair a phone has the steps.
Which computers does it run on?
Windows, macOS and Linux. The user guide has the install steps for each.
Which model is right for my computer?
Metis measures this computer in Setup and offers the models that fit it, with one marked “Recommended”. Which model fits which computer says how.
How do I choose how much of this computer Metis may use?
Open Models, then Computers & layout. Under “How much of this computer Metis may use” (on a Mac, “How much of this Mac’s memory Metis may use”), set the memory, and on a computer with graphics cards each card, then save. The models Metis offers and starts keep within it.
How fast is a model?
Open Models. Each model’s row says how fast it writes, in words a second, measured from its own replies on this computer. A model that has not replied yet is not measured.
Can I use a model I already run?
Yes. The Server step of Setup looks for a model server already running on this computer. Pick one and the model it should serve, and nothing is downloaded.
How do I stop a reply?
Press “Stop”. It ends a reply that is still running.
How do I change how Metis looks?
Open Settings. Setup’s first step, Look, asked “How should Metis look?” and Settings changes the answer.
How do I update Metis?
Open Updates. It checks for a newer version when Metis opens and once a day. Where “Updates install themselves when you say yes.”, press “Update now” in the Metis window. Otherwise it points you at the installer: download it and run it. Your chats and memory stay: “Chats, memory and models stay.” on Windows, “Settings, chats, memory and models stay.” on Linux.
How do I turn every model off?
Home has a power button. It turns every model off and frees their memory. Metis stays open.
What is a project?
A folder Metis has worked in. Projects lists each one with its chats, its activity, the documents it made and its schedules. The user guide has more.
Is the source open?
Yes. Metis is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 or later.
